One aspect of the island’s enchanting beauty is the many waterfalls. These must-see natural wonders offer a relaxing escape from the busy side of Thailand and are a perfect day out for visitors. We will explore the waterfalls you must visit in Koh Samui: Na Muang, Tar Nim, Tartain, Lat Wanon, Hin Lat, Hin Lad and Tan Rua Waterfall.
Travelers should take advantage of immersing themselves in unspoiled nature wherever possible, especially in tourist destinations like Thailand, where resorts and buildings are slowly replacing nature. Koh Samui’s waterfalls are plentiful, and they are a great activity for tourists as they often involve a journey through lush forests and jungle, with winding paths and beautiful nature. Whether it’s an adventurous hike to a viewpoint or a small, relaxed meander, there is nothing better than the reward of the sight and sound of clear rushing water and a refreshing mist from the waterfall. These serene spots provide perfect locations for relaxation, picnicking, and capturing unforgettable photographs. Now, let’s delve into the six must-visit waterfalls that are some of the best spots in Koh Samui!

Na Muang waterfall, also known as the “Purple Waterfall” due to the purple hue of its rock faces, is arguably the most famous waterfall in Samui. You’ll be spoiled for choice with two waterfalls- Na Muang 1 and Na Muang 2.
The first waterfall is easily accessible and features a large natural pool at the base, perfect for a refreshing swim while gazing at the cascading waterfall above. Like most waterfalls in Thailand, it is surrounded by lush greenery. The path to the waterfall is well-maintained and reached by a short walk from the car park, making it accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, take a short hike to the second waterfall. It is slightly more challenging to reach but worth the effort. This higher waterfall is nestled in a more dense forest, which makes it far more secluded and tranquil. The adventurous trek adds to the experience, making it a favorite among hikers and nature enthusiasts.
Please note that both waterfalls have slippery paths, so suitable footwear is advised. Access to the waterfalls is free, and food and snacks can be bought at the stalls along the way.
Tar Nim waterfall is a small yet serene waterfall surrounded by mossy rocks and greenery. It’s often called the “Secret Buddha Garden Waterfall and was created by a local fruit farmer. It’s situated in a magical garden full of statues, which adds to the wonder of it. The statues of Buddhas, deities and mystical creatures are dotted around the jungle, and the waterfall streams through it, making it a picturesque spot. Visitors tend to use this spot for sightseeing and taking photos rather than swimming in the waterfall.
Please note that the road to the garden and waterfall is a dirt track, so it’s advised that only experienced drivers attempt it. For those who prefer not to drive, the gardens can be visited as part of an adventure day trip, such as a jungle safari tour or an ATV ride, which can be easily arranged through most tour agents on Samui. Inside the gardens, there are several steep paths and many steps, making it challenging for individuals with limited mobility.
It is one of the more remote and lesser-known waterfalls in Koh Samui, but it is just as breathtaking. Located in the island’s southern part, it offers an off-the-beaten-path adventure for those willing to explore beyond the popular tourist trails. Tartain, sometimes known as “Tartan”, is a slightly more challenging route and takes about one and a half hours to reach. Along your journey, you’ll be surrounded by bamboo forest, plenty of plants and wildlife and even a pond where you can have a well-deserved dip. The waterfall cascades down the rocks into a natural pool, perfect for a swim after your hike. Once you’ve visited the waterfall, there is also a park you can explore and stalls for refreshments.
Please note that the pathway could be overgrown, so it’s best to wear comfortable shoes, long trousers, and sleeves to avoid mosquito bites!
Lat Wanon Waterfall is one of the highest and most beautiful waterfalls on Koh Samui. Situated in the island’s interior( Lipa Noi jungle), this multi-tiered waterfall offers a more rugged and adventurous experience. Reaching Lat Wanon involves a moderately strenuous hike through dense jungle and over rocky terrain that will take about half an hour. The effort is rewarded with stunning views of cascading water and natural pools at various levels, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The hike itself is an adventure, with opportunities to see local wildlife and enjoy the diverse flora of the island. This waterfall is perfect if you’re after a more secluded and private experience.
Located on Koh Samui, Hin Lat Waterfall is a popular natural attraction surrounded by green jungle. Its cool pools offer visitors a refreshing escape. The trail to the waterfall is well-maintained and easy to hike, making it accessible for most visitors. If you’re feeling hungry, there is a small restaurant at the base for refreshments.
Hin Lad Waterfall is another serene spot on Koh Samui, complemented by the nearby Wat Nam Tok Hin Lad Temple. The waterfall features multi-tiered cascades and a large pool ideal for swimming, while the temple offers a peaceful atmosphere for relaxation and cultural exploration.
Both Hin Lat and Hin Lat are located near each other. Situated in Lipa Noi, just 10 minutes from Nathon Town on Koh Samui, the waterfalls are nestled between Nathon and Thong Yang beaches. Both waterfalls are great spots for photography and as you can visit both, it makes a great day out.
Tan Rua Secret Falls, also known as the Waterfall of the Tan Rua Coffee Plantation, is a hidden gem in Koh Samui, located in the Maenam area. It offers a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path experience with a series of small cascades surrounded by dense jungle. The falls are accessible via a short hike, and visitors can enjoy the cool, refreshing waters. There’s also a nearby café where visitors can relax and enjoy views of the surrounding nature.
Please note that although you have to hike to the waterfall, the pathway is easily accessible by road.
